The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo Guide – Visit with The Tokyo Pass

Known popularly as MOMAT, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo is situated close to the Imperial Palace. Appropriately for such a prestigious location, the facility was Japan’s first national art museum.
Established in 1952 by the Ministry of Education, the museum’s extensive collection of modern Japanese art currently includes more than 13,000 pieces, with 18 Important Cultural Properties among them, all housed in a beautiful building designed by famed architect Yoshiro Taniguchi. The museum additionally owns hundreds of modern woodblock prints.
The MOMAT Collection part of the museum displays around 200 items in thematic exhibitions held three to four times a year. Of particular interest is the Nihonga Corner exhibiting Japanese-style paintings, rotated seasonally and which visitors can admire while sitting on Japanese tatami straw mats.
